What to Do When It All Comes Crashing Down
A Story of Resilience
Back when my eldest son was born, my son’s father had left me and married another woman before my son was born.
My job was also super stressful. I was a psychiatric technician who was put in a management position. I had to do the work of two people and the team I worked with were new trainees not only did I have the responsibility of teaching them, running the ward, and doing my daily work, but I was also responsible for ensuring that maintenance was completed every week.
We worked 12-hour shifts and at the end of the shift I still had a lot to finish before I could leave and had to stay up to an hour after to finish my day’s work. After picking up my son and going home, I was too exhausted to do anything. I lost weight. I knew I was depressed Fortunately, my infant son was a sweet baby who seemed to understand.
I remember one day sitting behind my desk doing an intake interview on a new patient and all I could think was to wonder why she was on that side of the desk and I was on this side. Despite all, what I had that she didn’t have was resilience.
