Several years ago, I was at my parents’ house when my brother was also visiting. With him he had his dog, Gismo. Gismo was a Yorkie, and he wasn’t afraid of anything. He thought he was the king of wherever he was.

On this one specific day, Gismo was out in the yard when the neighbor’s pit bull came across the road. This specific pit bull had bit another of my brothers a few days earlier, so I knew that he wasn’t a mild-mannered dog. Gismo decided to let the pit bull know that he did not want him in his yard.

I watched helplessly as Gismo and the other dog came face to face. I was sure that Gismo was a goner, because I was not coming between two dogs who were getting ready to fight.

Confidence

Gismo knew the importance of standing up for himself. He had confidence that he was in the right. I wasn’t so sure.

He Set His Boundary

The Yorkie didn’t care that the other dog was on the other side of the road, but when the dog threatened his space, Gismo wasn’t letting the bully get the better of him.

He Used His Voice

He let the pit bull know that he was standing his ground by growling at the other dog. That didn’t stop him.
